Friends of Fledgling Eps. 6 - Finn Schubert

On how to get off the "capitalist hamster wheel" by self publishing, claiming our unique narratives, and searching for better metaphors

Hi Fledgling!

Meet my friend, Finn Schubert. Finn is the first guest on the show who was once a Fledgling himself. He joined the last in-person workshop at Cafe Eloise, before the pandemic took us all online for awhile. We stayed in touch ever since, and I’ve been so grateful for the way we seem to always orbit, touch base, and support each other through life and writing’s ups and downs. In this episode we discuss how questions, breaking down narratives, and shapes informed the creation of his latest book of collected essays, There Are No Rules For a Pregnant Trans Body, and chat (excitedly!) about carving out a writing career that is so unique to you, it becomes a work of art itself. Finn has a strong personal ethos that never fails to inspire me. I hope you let him inspire you to give yourself the gift of permission, too.

Finn Schubert is constantly in search of better metaphors. An author of two essay collections, most recently There Are No Rules for a Pregnant Trans Body, various articles and fiction, and over a dozen medical journal publications, Finn is always asking, "What's really going on here?" and "How can we look at it differently?" Finn works as the Director of Strategic Initiatives at Transgender Strategy Center, which focuses on building strong trans-led community organizations. He is also very recently the founder of Better Metaphors Studio, a space to FINISH SMALL THINGS. That project is just getting started. His various work--as a writer, public health professional, nonprofit strategist, and parent--is tied together by the belief that a metaphor is a strategy. We all need better metaphors.

Dear listeners, I believe in paying our friends for sharing their wisdom here. So I do! Consider upgrading to paid to listen to the full 32 minute conversation, receive monthly interviews with industry professionals, and to support our work.
